The new TAG Heuer Carrera collection elevates the original racing chronograph to unprecedented levels of luxury with four strikingly elegant models. The elegant chronograph models strike a perfect balance between advanced watchmaking technology and unprecedented refinement at the cutting edge of horological innovation.
To mark the brand’s 160th anniversary this year, the TAG Heuer Carrera collection welcomes yet more additions to the range that was launched this year – this time, the iconic chronograph features an elegant design reminiscent of historic models with a touch of modern flair. These chronographs have a refined and modern look inspired by the pure style that first made the TAG Heuer Carrera iconic.
Contemporary elegance inspired by the original TAG Heuer Carrera
The sophistication of this reinterpreted TAG Heuer Carrera comes from its sleek stainless-steel bezel, which has been designed without a tachymeter scale to keep the overall aesthetics in line with the unforgettable silver-dial Heuer Carrera that was originally launched in 1963. This stunning 42 mm timepiece maintains its chronograph functionality with two push buttons and subdials. Available in opaline black or sunray brushed blue, anthracite and silver, the dial features “azurage” subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock and a running small-second counter at 6 o’clock above a discreet date window. The beating heart of this timeless TAG Heuer Carrera is the brand’s proprietary movement, the Calibre Heuer 02.
The models with black and blue dials are presented on a streamlined h-shaped stainless-steel bracelet. The angles of the outer and inner links are rounded for a more fluid appearance and the bracelet is thinner for improved comfort. The bicoloured version with a silver-coloured dial and rose- gold-plated hands and the model with a deep anthracite dial are paired with a handsome brown alligator leather strap. The screw-down sapphire case back provides a fascinating view of the innovative movement inside, made even more exclusive by its rose-gold-coloured oscillating mass.
Exceptional performance thanks to the Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement
The TAG Heuer Carrera line has always featured the most advanced watchmaking technology developed by the brand. The redesigned models are powered by the Calibre Heuer 02 movement, which is visible through the transparent case back. This sophisticated in-house innovation is entirely swiss-made in TAG Heuer’s Chevenez Manufacture. It comprises 168 components, including a column wheel and a vertical clutch – signatures of improved chronograph timekeeping and high-quality manufacture movements – and boasts an impressive power reserve of 80 hours.
1965 “DATO 45” TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph Special Edition
The final installment in the Carrera chapter for 2020, is the first special edition of the TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph, equipped with a Heuer 02 manufacture movement, boldly reinterpreting the storied 1965 Heuer Carrera “Dato 45”. The new limited edition – available with a blue or white dial – is based on the brand’s Carrera Sport Chronograph models introduced earlier in the year. Each version is powered by the Heuer 02 manufacture movement and limited to 1,860 pieces.
The classic Heuer “Dato 45”, was notably the first Heuer wrist chronograph ever to feature a turning date disc. Like its famous ancestor, this special TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph has its date window positioned at 12 o’clock on the dial.
At its heart is a Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement that delivers an impressive 80-hour power reserve. The number of the limited edition – 1,860 of each version – is a nod to the year Edouard Heuer founded his watchmaking workshop in Switzerland’s Jura Mountains.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph with the blue dial has a 44 mm polished and fine-brushed stainless-steel case and features a blue ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale. The blue circular brushed dial has contrasting white “azurage” chronograph subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock marking the elapsed minutes and hours, respectively. A blue opaline permanent seconds counter is positioned at 6 o’clock.
The white dial reference also has a robust 44 mm polished and fine-brushed stainless-steel case, but its black ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale offers a particularly bold contrast to the silver opaline dial. Black “azurage” minute and hour chronograph counters, at 3 and 9 o’clock, respectively, add to the striking look. A white opaline permanent seconds indicator is positioned at 6 o’clock.
On both versions, the applied rhodium-plated indexes and the rhodium-plated hour and minute hands are coated with white Super-LumiNova®, which offers outstanding legibility in all lighting conditions. The dial features a rhodium-plated TAG Heuer logo and is printed with the words “CARRERA HEUER 02 80 HOURS”. The highlight of this model is the aperture at 12 o’clock displaying the red date on a white background – a nod to the original Heuer 3147N “Dato 45”, the watch that inspired the new timepieces. The red date is complemented by a red lacquered central chronograph seconds hand and red motion lines in the 3 o’clock counter. The dial is protected by a domed and bevelled sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph has a stainless-steel screw-down case back engraved with the words “ONE OF 1860”, indicating its limited-edition status. Through the sapphire crystal on the case back, the Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement is on display with its specially dedicated 160th anniversary oscillating mass. This chronograph model is water-resistant to 10 bar (100 metres/330 feet), and is presented on a stainless-steel H-shaped bracelet with a folding clasp secured by double safety push buttons. These outstanding limited-edition chronographs are delivered in a special box designed to celebrate TAG Heuer’s 160th anniversary.
A history of unequivocal elegance
Former TAG Heuer CEO Jack Heuer dedicated himself to the intensive study of industrial design, which heavily influenced the DNA of his most beloved collection and has shaped the design and construction of all TAG Heuer Carrera models since 1963. With these new reinterpreted models, the flowing and elegant touches that sparked jack heuer’s interest decades ago are more apparent than ever. The uncluttered three-dimensionality of the original dial with its three subdials made it easy to read at a glance and was a truly ground-breaking design at the time – and it is now echoed on these signature innovations. Other details, such as the wide bezel and the applied indexes that follow the angle of the flange, take their cues from another area that inspired the TAG Heuer Carrera, one in which excellent legibility and timing at a glance are of the essence: motor racing.
Born on the racetrack yet equally at home at a formal evening event, the new TAG Heuer Carrera timepieces exude sheer elegance and make a striking statement in any situation. They not only serve as a tribute to the collection’s acclaimed roots, but also demonstrate the brand’s expertise in seamlessly combining sophistication in design and watchmaking.
