TAG Heuer celebrates a milestone anniversary this year, as they see in their 160th year. To commemorate this momentous feat in watchmaking, the brand has relaunched a range of iconic Carreras; sporty chronographs that are set to become a part of the racing DNA that the brand is synonymous with.
Earlier this year, TAG launched two new Carreras that featured the in-house Calibre Heuer 02 movement; the 160 Years Silver, and the Montreal Limited Edition. This month sees four more timepieces joining their line up that echoes back to their predecessors of the 1960s.
In 1962, TAG Heuer’s CEO Jack Heuer oversaw the creation of the first Carrera model after becoming inspired by the legendary Carrera Panamericana race; a border to border sports car racing event on the open roads in Mexico. It was said to be the most thrill-seeking race unlike any other in the world and ran for five years throughout the 1950s. The embodiment of such an adventure piqued the interest of Heuer, and so he set the TAG brand the task of creating a timepiece that would honour the race. They needed to be bold, daring, and be as precise as possible. He wanted the timepieces to be ideal for drivers who needed to see the time throughout races and so clean silhouettes and well-proportioned dials became the creative path.
After much development, the following year saw the launch of the first Carrera chronographs. They became an instant classic with fans of the TAG Heuer brand and the world of motor racing and became the timepiece of choice for driving legends Jo Siffert and the Scuderia Ferrari racing team.
Decades later, the timepiece is still sought after by watch collectors and thrill-seekers and the new timepieces within the collection are just as precise, and just as bold. They feature two styles of statement chronographs, with a sleek and sporty finish. With shorter lugs for enhanced comfort, the 44 mm stainless-steel case features alternating polished and fine-brushed finishes that make the watch appear sleeker and thinner. The new H-shaped bracelet is thinner than previous models, making it lighter on the wrist and ideal for both sports, and every day wear.
The models are available in a stylish deep blue with a matching ceramic bezel, a muted olive green with a stainless-steel bezel or one of two black versions, each with a sleek, black ceramic bezel.
The statement piece of the collection is a Special Edition black and rose gold model in collaboration with Aston Martin. Featuring a classic black leather strap, black ceramic bezel with rose-gold coloured lacquer – a first for TAG Heuer – and solid 18K rose gold crown and push buttons. The oscillating weight of the movement, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, is fashioned from black PVD-coated brass with rose gold printing.
The TAG Heuer Carrera line has always featured the brand’s most advanced watchmaking technology and these new models are powered by the Calibre Heuer 02 movement. This is entirely created in TAG Heuer’s Swiss manufacture base and comprises of 168 components including a column wheel and a vertical clutch with an impressive time reserve of 80 hours! In short, the TAG Heuer Carrera is the epitome of Swiss watchmaking and a precise, flawless, and contemporary timepiece.
