TUDOR is an award-winning Swiss watch brand, dating back to 1926 when ‘The Tudor’ was first registered as a brand on behalf of the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf. The company offers watches with the quality and dependability of Rolex, at a more affordable price point, making them an ideal choice for watch collectors worldwide. They are dependable, robust, and stylish, and a great choice for the boldest adventurers on land, underwater and on ice. Their collections are sought after by many, including emblematic models such as 1926, Pelagos and the Black Bay.
This season, Black Bay welcomes a new model to the family in the form of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight “Navy Blue”. The piece’s name incorporates its rich navy colourings, but also the year 1958, in which the first TUDOR divers’ watch was presented. The new model takes its design cues from its predecessor, the Black Bay Fifty-eight model launched in 2018, including the 39mm diameter case, a nod to the watch proportions of the 1950s.
In 1969, TUDOR introduced a divers’ watch with a blue dial and bezel, and the colouring soon crept in throughout the rest of the TUDOR sports watches, coining the term ‘TUDOR blue’. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight ‘Navy Blue’ also follows in this tradition. The colour also appears on the ‘soft touch’ strap offered with the model, made from a synthetic, tactile material resembling flannel. Other strap options for this model include a blue Jacquard fabric with silver band, and a riveted steel choice.
Like other models in the Black Bay range, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight ‘Navy Blue’ features angular hands, known as ‘Snowflake’, a characteristic of TUDOR models, first appearing in 1969.
While the new piece is inspired by the past, it is very much anchored in the present, with a subtle blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary watchmaking. The durability and precision as well as the quality of its finishing are above current industry standards, making for a fine watch indeed.
