This year is most certainly an unusual year for us all. Due to the necessary measures and precautions needed in light of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Watches & Wonders show (formally SIHH) was cancelled and in place they launched a unique digital version in which the exhibiting brands could still showcase their new collections. This article in which we highlight our top pieces from the brands is part of our Watches & Wonders 2020 roundup. To see more of them, click here.
Vacheron Constantin has one of the most storied histories in Swiss watchmaking and the brand has maintained its timeless prestige with its latest launches at the digital-only 2020 Watches & Wonders. This year, it takes us to a world of ‘L’Imaginaire’, taking as its inspiration the power of imagination to dream of the seemingly impossible and then deploying those cutting-edge innovations in its watchmaking. And we can assure you that the results are every bit as exciting as they sound.
Vacheron Overseas Collection
The oldest continuous watch manufacturer in the world, Vacheron Constantin’s timepieces have a classic aesthetic. With over half a century of refinement, its most renowned design, The Overseas, is one of the most sought-after models in haute horology, so a new release is one not to miss. A descendant of the 222 model released in 1977, the first Overseas luxury sports watch was released in 1996 with the collection relaunched in 2016 and has been much admired ever since.
While the Overseas’ shape and style has been fluid, certain design notes have endured: the brand’s immediately recognisable symbol, the Maltese Cross, on the fluted bezel. The design has been exquisitely updated and yet maintain its ultra-thin 8.1mm silhouette despite its added complexity.
Vacheron Constantin has expanded the collection by adding a watch in a precious-metal case to the collection. The 41mm 18-carat 5N pink-gold version is presented on a matching bracelet, and its tone beautifully offsets the timepiece’s deep-blue dial. The original’s three sub-dials remain, displaying the date on a perpetual calendar, as does the lunar display above the 6 o’clock hour marker.
Vacheron Égérie Collection
Another exciting new line, launched prior to Watches & Wonders, is the new Égérie collection. Named after the French word for ‘muse’, it’s another example of Vacheron Constantin’s ability to modernise its classically elegant aesthetic to meet the demands of today’s tastes. Features that have been brand signatures since the early 19th century, such as the two overlapping circles on the bezel, return to make this release a stunning example of fine watchmaking, effortlessly blending the classic and contemporary.
The collection, which comprises designs dedicated entirely to women, is described by the brand as representing the meeting point of haute horlogerie and haute couture. It makes use of a pioneering ‘tapestry’ technique that gives the dial the illusion of being made of pleated silk. An off-centre crown, sitting in line with a smaller circle, also offset, on the dial are two elements that are consistent throughout the collection. Completing the trio of distinctive features is the Vacheron Constantin logo, tucked into the bezel ring below the 8 o’clock hour marker. This diagonal trajectory across the model gives the appearance of gracefully draped fabric, completing the complex yet artfully delicate design. You can admire the delights of the collection here.
Each model within in the Égérie family is available in either stainless steel or 18-carat 5N pink gold and has a diamond-set bezel. Diamonds also encircle the sub-dial, which houses either a moon-phase or a date indicator. The exquisite collection includes models on stainless-steel bracelets as well as on an array of alligator-leather straps in candied chestnut, raspberry pink and midnight blue. Practical as well as beautiful, every timepiece is water-resistant to 30m, making it as suitable for everyday use as for after-dark wear.
