Christmas is just around the corner, and if there’s any gift that’s certain to be a surefire hit, it’s the Rolex Datejust. First introduced in 1945 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the brand, this family of timepieces is inextricably linked with the celebration of special occasions – so here we’ve picked a handful of Datejust models that are sure to make Christmas morning very special for someone
The Datejust is undoubtedly one of Rolex’s most enduring watch designs, making it a fool-proof choice of present. The model, launched in 1945, has been available for ladies since 1957. The effortlessly elegant ladies’ Yellow Rolesor Lady-Datejust 28, made in Oystersteel and yellow gold (£8,600), couldn’t be more festive thanks to its glowing champagne and diamond-dot dial. Alternatively, for the ultimate feminine model, why not gift the exquisite 28mm Oystersteel and white-gold version (£7,300) with a subtly coloured dusty pink diamond-dot dial? Both timepieces feature the Datejust’s famous fluted bezel and, of course, the Cyclops lens which first appeared on the Datejust in 1953. The timepieces are powered by Rolex’s new-generation 2236 calibre with an approximate power reserve of 55 hours. The innovative movement is fitted with Rolex’s patented Syloxi silicon hairspring, which is ten times more precise than a traditional hairspring when exposed to shocks, insensitive to magnetic fields, and remains reliable in the face of temperature changes. Its ingenious construction allows it to maintain its equilibrium and therefore precision in every position, making it a watch that can always be relied on. On that note, thanks to the Twinlock double waterproofness system, the Datejust 28 models are also water-resistant to 100m, meaning it’s an ideal year-round piece, whether on an adventure in the great outdoors or sitting down to Christmas dinner!

Falling for diamonds
For those looking for a slightly larger timepiece, we’d recommend the 31mm models. The icy-looking 31mm Oystersteel and white-gold Datejust (£7,300), complemented by a matching silver diamond-dot dial, is impossible not to fall for. It’s powered by the manufacture’s popular and robust self-winding 2235 calibre, equipped with an approximate 48-hour power reserve. Or if you want to get your loved one something a little different, the Oystersteel and Everose gold Datejust 31 with brown diamond-dot dial, powered by the 2236 calibre, (£14,600) will take their breath away, especially matched to the diamond-laden bezel. Just like the 28mm models, these timepieces are water-resistant to 100m.
All four of our COSC-certified Datejust recommendations are available with the brand’s five-link Jubilee bracelet, which was first designed for the original Oyster Perpetual Datejust in 1945. The Jubilee bracelet was only available in gold until the mid-1950s, when two-tone versions also appeared on the scene. While a number of Datejusts feature an Oysterclasp, these watches’ supple and comfortable bracelets are secured with Rolex’s gracefully concealed Crownclasp. Read more on the Rolex Datejust 31 here.
There’s no doubt that Rolex’s flagship Datejust models have an evergreen appeal, which is why we are so convinced that it’s the perfect watch to gift at Christmas.
