As part of a series interviewing the leading minds from luxury watch brands, we were delighted to sit down with the CEO of Panerai, Jean-Marc Pontroue.
This episode was recorded whilst aboard their luxury yacht – Eilean, a branded restoration project originally from 1936 that Panerai have restored to perfection. Read more about the history of the brand’s association with the sea and how Eilean was discovered here.
Joined by our Head of Watch Buying Mark Toulson, this episode discusses the latest Panerai watch release, the Submersible, and how Jean-Marc plans to push the brand forward.
Jean-Marc has been in the watch industry for 20 years, making the move after 7 years with luxury watch brand, Roger Dubuis to take over the much respected position of CEO at Panerai.
A brand famous for sports and divers watches are proud of their modernisation and future proofing of their watches, such as their latest watch, the Submersible. Jean-Marc discuss how he first saw the Submersible model as being very much apart of the Luminor collections. However, it wasn’t telling a strong enough story about the model so he decided to take the Submersible into a new direction using new materials to produce the watch, whilst bringing on board brand ambassadors from extreme sports, who share the same values as the brand such as Mike Horn, a professional explorer.
The brand are using reclaimed materials in their watch productions to become a sustainable sourced watch brand:
“Panerai has taken the lead on being one of the stand out brands recently by using environmentally friendly materials. Although we have only used a few to start with we believe that in the future we need to become more environmentally friendly. That’s why we design future products with recycled plastic straps and 20% currently recycled products. In the next 5 years we want to have 100% recycled materials used.” – Jean-Marc Pontroue
