Rolex is billing 2019 as a year of consolidation, and launching a number of new and updated classics, each with a new-generation movement and a subtly redesigned case. Of these, the new Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 caused the biggest stir at the fair, appearing not only in 18-carat white gold for the first time but also upsized to 42mm.

Since its launch in 1992, the Yacht-Master has been the perfect weekend watch for sporting gentlemen thanks to its distinctive Oyster case and automatic movement. Rolex has released numerous iterations in the intervening years, with varying case sizes and materials, but this year’s version really hits the mark with its robust 42mm 18-carat white-gold case, black lacquered dial and bidirectional rotating Cerachrom bezel. Inside ticks the brand’s new calibre 3235 movement, giving it a 70-hour power reserve – perfect for seeing its wearer through the weekend. Topping off the watch’s elegant yet sporting look is Rolex’s Oysterflex bracelet, with the Glidelock fitting system to ensure a secure and comfortable fit on the wrist. It’s priced at £21,400 and we think it will be a huge hit when it arrives in our stores later this year.

Another classic to receive a subtle update is the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 – a perennial favourite among Rolex aficionados. Once again, the brand has subtly redesigned the lines of the case and equipped it with a new calibre, 3255 (like all Rolex watches, it boasts Superlative Chronometer certification). We particularly love the new 18-carat yellow-gold edition with a stunning green ombré dial. And Rolex’s incredible attention to detail extends to the President bracelet, with minute ceramic rods fitted into each individual link to give longer-lasting flexibility on the wrist.
