Every year one of the highlights of the horological world, and especially ours, is Baselworld. Situated in the hustling city of Basel, in northwest Switzerland this fair showcases some of the most prestigious and luxury timepiece companies and luxury jewellery brands. Hundreds of key designers and brands attend to set up elaborate and impressive stands and present their latest pieces and collections for buyers, watch and jewellery connoiseurs to peruse. These aren’t just any presentations however and brands go above and beyond to enthral, excite and entice people to them. This includes celebrities appearances, live model demonstrations, luxury cars on show, fashion shows and more.
Baselworld’s history dates back to 1917, when it first entered the world as The Basel Mustermesse, which presented the services and offerings of the Swiss watch and jewellery industry. From 1931 to 1972, the fair was exclusively Swiss, until in 1973 companies from France, Italy, Germany and Great Britain were also welcome to present themselves in Basel. In 1986, the fair opened its gates to brands from around the world, making it the world’s most important international show for watches and jewellery. In 2003, the fair was renamed Baselworld: The Watch and Jewellery Show and by 2007, the fair attracted over 100,000 visitors from more than 100 countries around the world and over 150,000 in 2013.
Baselworld is presenting a new concept in 2019. The show is transformed from the industry’s order platform into a year-round marketing and communications platform, for which reason Baselworld is introducing numerous new and primarily digital communication tools. The live experience will gain even greater priority: this also includes many new restaurants and bars in the halls and a Show Plaza in Hall 1.2, which will bring together top-class models and fine jewellery in inspiring fashion shows throughout the event.
It’s not hard to see why. Baselworld is certainly a monumental event and we are thrilled to be in attendance. We are going to be taking a look at the latest Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Hublot, Gucci and Zenith pieces amongst others, as well as filming our buyer’s reactions on some of the pieces they have seen, loved, and placed orders for for 2019. We are also interviewing key individuals at jewellery companies like Fope, Roberto Coin and Messika. Keep an eye out on our social media for sneak peeks of the our brands’ latest collections and pieces as well as more in depth pieces here on Calibre.
